Our team has been in the label printing industry for decades. Supporting businesses of all sizes, with their labeling and label printer needs.
In our experience, the best printers come from a handful of manufacturers:
Put simply, direct thermal printing uses heat sensitive paper whilst thermal transfer printing use heat to print ink with the use of ribbons.
If your labels only need to last a short while (e.g. shipping labels) then direct thermal printing might be for you. However if durability is your top priority then thermal transfer could be best suited for your needs as they stand up well to harsh environments. Thermal transfer printers can print both methods. Direct thermal printers can only print direct thermal labels.
DPI stands for ‘dots per inch’, which essentially dictates how clear and sharp the printing of the label will be. The higher the DPI, the better the quality of the print.
Generally speaking, 200 dpi (i.e. 203 dpi) printers are the most common and are used for printing simple labels like shipping and carton labels.
For finer print and smaller barcodes a dpi of 300 or 600 is recommended. These are ideal for product labels, QR codes, care tag printing etc.
